B. 5:12-21 HOW VITAL RIGHTEOUSNESS OVERTURNS SIN, DEATH & CONDEMNATION

a. 5:12-13 DEATH THROUGH SIN CAME THROUGH ONE MAN

DiA TOUto, HOSper di' heNOS anTHROpou he ha-marTIa eis ton KOSmon eiSELthen,

Therefore, as through one man :sin entered into the world,

kai diA tes ha-marTIas ho THAna-tos;

and :death through :sin;

kai HOUtos eis PANtas anTHROpous ho THAna-tos diELthen [1330], eph' ho PANtes HEmar-ton:

and so :death passed unto all men, for that all sinned:

Achri gar NOmou ha-marTIa en en KOSmo; ha-marTIa de ouk el-loGAtai [1677] me ONtas NOmou [3551].

13for until thelaw sin was in the world; but sin is not put to account when there is no law.

b. 5:14 DEATH REIGNED FROM ADAM TO MOSES APART FROM LAW

alLA e-baSIleu-sen [936] ho THAna-tos aPO A-DAM MEchri Mo-uSEos, kai ePI tous me ha-marTEsan-tas

But :death reigned from Adam till Moses, even over them that had not sinned

after the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a figure of the one to come.

c. 5:15a But not as the trespass, thus also the free gift.

All' ouch hos to paRAPto-ma [3900], HOUtos kai to CHAris-ma [5486].

d. 5:15b GRACE BY JESUS OVERTURNS DEATH THROUGH ADAM

ei gar to tou heNOS pa-rapTOma-ti hoi polLOI aPEtha-non, polLO MALlon he CHAris tou TheOU,

For if by the trespass of the one the many died, much rather did the grace of :God,

and the gift by grace which is of the one man, Jesus Christ, abound unto the many.

e. 5:16 VITAL RIGHTEOUSNESS REMOVES ALL CONDEMNATION

kai ouch hos di' heNOS ha-marTEsan-tos, to DOre-ma [1434]:

And not as through the one that sinned, is the gift:

to men gar KRIma [2917] - ex heNOS eis kaTAkri-ma [2631],

for the judgment - it came of one unto condemnation,

to de CHAris-ma [5486] ek polLON pa-rap-toMAton [3900] eis diKAIo-ma [1345].

but the free gift came of many trespasses unto justification.

f. 5:17 AUTHORITY IS RESTORED THROUGHTHE GIFT OF VITAL RIGHTEOUSNESS

For if, by the trespass of the one, :death reigned through the one;

en zo-E ba-siLEUsou-sin diA tou heNOS, IeSOU ChrisTOU.

reign in life through the one, Jesus Christ.

g. 5:18 DISOBEDIENCE BROUGHT CONDEMNATION: OBEDIENCE BROUGHT VITAL RIGHTEOUSNESS

Ara oun hos di' heNOS pa-rapTOma-tos [3900], eis PANtas anTHROpous eis kaTAkri-ma [2631];

So then as through one trespass, it is unto all men unto condemnation;

HOUtos kai di' heNOS di-kaiOma-tos [1345] eis PANtas anTHROpous eis diKAIo-sin [1347] zo-ES [2222].

even so through one act of righteousness it is unto all men unto justification of life.

h. 5:19 DISOBEDIENCE MAKES SINNERS: OBEDIENCE IMPARTS RIGHTEOUSNESS

HOSper gar diA tes pa-ra-koES tou heNOS anTHROpou ha-mar-toLOI ka-teSTAthe-san [2525]hoi polLOI,

For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners,

HOUtos kai diA tes hu-pa-koES [5218]tou heNOS DIkai-oi [1343]ka-ta-staTHEson-tai [2525]hoi polLOI.

thus also through the obedience of the one shall the many be made righteous.

i. 5:20-21 LAW AGGRAVATES SIN: GRACE RELEASES LIFE THROUGH RIGHTEOUSNESS

NOmos de pa-reiSELthen [3922], HIna ple-oNAse[4121]to paRAPto-ma [3900];

And law came in besides, that the trespass abound;

hou de e-pleOna-sen heha-marTIa, hu-pe-re-peRISseu-sen [5248]heCHAris:

but where :sin abounded :grace surpassed far more:

HIna, HOSper e-baSIleu-sen [936]heha-marTIa en tothaNAto,

21that, just as :sin reigned in :death,

HOUtos kai heCHAris ba-siLEUsediA di-kai-oSUnes

thus also might :grace reign through righteousness

eis zo-EN aiOni-on diA IeSOU ChrisTOU tou KuRIou heMON.

unto eternal life through Jesus Christ our :Lord.

NOTE: Bible Numerics establishes this chapter as an integral part of Romans 5-8. These latter 3 chapters find the key and basis of their understanding through a careful study of chapter 5.

It is here that we gain insight how because of the sin of the first Adam, that through him the entire human race became corrupted and contaminated. But so through one man, the second Adam, the entire human race received the potential gift of forgiveness, cleansing and reconciliation. Of course, a legal pardon offered, does not become viable until accepted - but the potential for every member of the human race is there - because of Jesus' “Finished Work” of Atonement at the Cross. Jesus was born to die! Thiswas the great point of His coming as man.

And what makes this legal transaction viable - once accepted? The gift(do-reA) of the Holy Spirit! 11 times this word giftappears in the New Testament, and this chapter introduces the last 6 references in the 14 letters. (One is in the Gospels and 4 in the book of Acts.)

Note its use in 5:15. Here Paul by the Holy Spirit describes it as the gift of grace, that aboundedunto many!

This hearkens back to the statement of Jesus who said that He had come to bring life (zo-E), and to bring it more abundantly! The life He brings to dwell within us is not a well from which we draw water - but an artesianwellthat evermore flows into everlasting life. See John 7:37-39 where Jesus describes the experience of the indwelling Holy Spirit as rivers of living water- a veritable Niagara Falls! The first reference to this word is in John 4:10, where Jesus tells the woman of Samaria that the gift(do-reA) is living water! Is this the description of the indwelling Holy Spirit in you? If it is not yet - it canbe! Don't quit seeking until you too have a Rees Howells experience of the Holy Spirit possessing and flowing through you!

In Romans 5:17 Paul calls this the giftof righteousness - abundance of grace- by which we reign in lifeby the one, Jesus Christ. The Atonement and the Holy Spirit are 2 sides of the same coin. In the Old Testament liturgy - anointing was first with blood, and thenwith oil! In the 3 great Festivals of Israel, Passover points to Calvary and Jesus' Atonement, and 50 days later, the counting of the Omer - is Pentecost. The two are again intimately tied together.

So this chapter - Romans 5 - sets forth the Atonement in the clearest possible manner - and Romans 8:12-39 powerfully links it with the Holy Spirit.

Peter in Acts 2:38 uses this word gift(do-reA), and in this “Peter Package” insolubly ties together repentance on the basis of atonement, baptism sealing it, and the gift(do-reA) of the Holy Spirit - completing it! Let us not sell ourselves short! Let us have the fullBiblical presentation. J.A.W.
